Collapse ▲Systemic and Institutional barriers that perpetuate the long-standing opportunity and achievement gaps between white and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students must be addressed in programs that serve youth. By embedding racial equity principles in farm to school programming, we can use our collective power to challenge racism in education, food systems, and farm to school overall.

- Strengthening Equity & Inclusion in Garden Education (School Garden Support Organization Network) – The School Garden Support Organization Network has compiled resources that identify tools that can help farm to school programs intertwine equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice into all aspects of each school garden support organization.
- Connecting Food, Culture, and Community Lesson Plans (FoodCorps) – The FoodCorps lessons include hands-on experiential activities to engage kids in learning about healthy food. The Connecting Food, Culture, and Community lesson plans help students build knowledge about other cultures and communities.
- Celebrating Diversity in the Garden (KidsGardening) – In this KidsGardening lesson, students will explore the benefits of biodiversity and how it makes the garden ecosystem stronger by learning about a technique known as companion planting. They can extend the lesson by discussing how diversity is also beneficial in other settings like in their classroom and community.
- Equity, Inclusion & Anti-Bias Resources (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, Growing Minds) – Systemic barries that perpetuate the long-standing opportunity and achievement gaps between white and Black students – which start in early childhood – must be addressed in programs that serve young children. ASAP’s Growing Minds program has created equity, inclusion, and anti-bias resources for farm to school programs.
